Bobby Kotick says Sony’s being a baby about Microsoft deal- ‘They would just like to prevent our merger from happening’-
Microsoft’s proposed $68.7 billion acquisition of Activision Blizzard now looks very likely to go ahead, following last week’s news that the UK’s regulator has (provisionally) bought most of the assurances it’s been given. A specific concern allayed was over Call of Duty, the mega-popular series which Microsoft has spent the last several months offering deals on to any- and all-comers, with Sony’s pleas becoming increasingly desperate: To the extent that, around three weeks ago, it suggested Microsoft might sabotage COD on PlayStation.
Sony is beginning to sound like a bit of a whiner here, and Activision Blizzard CEO Bobby Kotick has had enough. In an email sent to staff earlier this week with the subject line “A March update on the Microsoft deal,” Kotick addresses the deal’s progress generally, before going in on Sony with both feet.
Kotick says Activision Blizzard and Microsoft have been doing the rounds in Brussels and London, and during various …
EA unveils FIFA’s new look and warns of marketing blitz for the ages-
EA has begun gearing up for the re-branding exercise of the year, as it leaves football’s world governing body FIFA in the dust and moves the series on under the brand of EA Sports FC. A new press release and official site has the logo, a bunch of marketing bumpf about the glory of football, and the promise of a first detailed look at the retitled series in July.
“Over the coming days, the EA Sports FC brand will debut in more than 100 matches across the biggest leagues in the world,” warns EA. This is going to be the marketing blitz to end all marketing blitzes, and EA’s signed up all of the world’s major leagues including the Premier League, La Liga, Bundesliga, Serie A, Ligue 1, WSL, NWSL, CONMEBOL and more. In addition to this it’s signed up individual teams and players who’ll be repping the EA Sports FC life faithfully.
The phrase EA has alighted on for this new era is “a fan-first future.” Not quite sure what that means but it’s the kind of lip-service that works i…
Helldivers 2 dev says patrol spawn rates are busted and that Arrowhead’s walking its changes back, but ‘we want to give it proper testing’ to ‘see that it works this time’-
Helldivers 2’s patrol rates have been a little wonky for a while. After a patch angled at making patrol spawns equitable for solo players (in other words, harder), it was revealed that said update actually just made solo diver’s lives just as much of a living hell as a squad of four. Which didn’t seem like the intended effect.
Well, Arrowhead games has taken note and is trying to do something about it, as per a recent announcement by community manager Twinbeard on the game’s official Discord.
“As many of you have noticed, something has been off with patrols and spawn rate for some time now. This primarily leads to more enemies rearing their ugly heads than they’re supposed to, indirectly to players feeling overrun, kiting, and subsequently less fun gameplay. This has been the case for all players, but predominantly for smaller teams and solo playing.”
However, Twinbeard writes, the developer team has been distracted—mainly from the recen…
Gen Z and Gen Alpha crave games with ‘more meaning’ and ‘personalisation across everything’ according to PlayStation exec—who implies that (you guessed it) AI is the answer-
Sony’s been on a bit of a bender with AI stuff recently, huh—as I’m sure a recently-misrepresented Neil Druckmann will tell you. AI—or I should specify, generative AI—may prove valuable in game development, but as with a lot of new technologies the actual use cases devs are finding clash severely with the executive pipe dream of paying fewer voice actors and writers in the name of “reactivity”.
Flying under the radar of the Druckmann controversy (though nonetheless spotted by IGN) is another ream of buzzwords courtesy of head of PlayStation productions and product Asad Qizilbash, who has a brave new angle on the tech via an interview on Sony’s website: You see, AI’s got what the kids crave for more reasons like—uh, personalisation, and reactivity, and meaning, and stuff.
“In terms of gaming’s future, I envision games becoming more personalised due to advances in technology and AI,” Qizilbash says when asked about PlayStation’s next …
Monster Energy tries to bully indie dev out of using the word ‘monster’, but chose the wrong guy to pick on-
Monster Energy is a ubiquitous energy drink brand, now owned by Coca Cola, that as part of its marketing targets the gaming audience. It was an in-game item in Death Stranding (though clearly didn’t pony up for the Director’s Cut, which removed it). As much as the brand wants to appeal to gamers, though, it also has a reputation within the industry for being heavily litigious. Previous legal tangles include a clash with Ubisoft over Immortals: Fenyx Rising (which was initially called Gods and Monsters).
Yep, it’s another brand that thinks it owns the generic word it’s adopted. This time, however, it picked the wrong target.
Coca Cola and Monster Energy have targeted indie developer Glowstick Entertainment for the great crime of making a game called Dark Deception: Monsters & Mortals (thanks, TheGamer). Founder and CEO Vincent Livings posted about the legal threats and the settlement offered by Monster, which allows for the studio to use the name in excha…
